The Synology DiskStation is the network attached storage (NAS) appliance which is produced to run the Synology DSM OS. The DiskStation is a pedestal/tower embedded NAS appliance, which ranges from one bay to as many as twelve bays within a single enclosure. Some models feature storage scalability, where physical units may be tethered together for additional storage, without the need for volume recreation or loss of availability.
I have a few products that I’d like to review, the Synology DiskStation
- DS418 play,
Network-attached storage (NAS) is a file-level computer data storage server connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS is specialized for serving files either by its hardware, software, or configuration. It is often manufactured as a computer appliance – a purpose-built specialized computer.
Basically, I’ll be discussing would be few difference in functions of these DiskStation:
DS218play: Designed for multimedia enthusiasts, DS218play supports real-time transcoding of 4K Ultra HD source content. With the availability of centralized management, DS218play is ideal for fast file sharing and reliable backup for all types of devices. Video transcoding refers to the process of converting video files originally unsupported by a media player into a compatible format and resolution. Different Synology NAS models are equipped with different transcoding capabilities. You can stream your video collection on your Synology NAS to a media player using Video Station, DS video or Media Server. Below are tables indicating the behaviour of Synology NAS in respective scenarios.
Video Station: Video Station lets you easily manage and organize movies, TV shows, and home videos, and stream to other computers, smartphones, and media players.
Photo Station: Photo Station allows you to effectively organize and share photos and albums, while easily communicating with others using labels, comments, and more.
Audio Station: Audio Station is your personal music centre, designed to intelligently sort and organize your audio files, and stream to Google Cast enabled devices easily. Audio Station supports lossless formats ensuring pristine audio quality.
Access files on your Synology NAS over the Internet without the hassle of setting up port forwarding rules, DDNS, or other complicated network settings. Quick Connect allows you to connect via a secure, customizable address, so that you can instantly access media and work files on any Internet-connected device with no additional charge.
DS418play: Synology DS418 comes with a new 64-bit quad-core processor, delivering excellent data transfer speed, large storage volume management, and 10-bit 4K H.265 video transcoding on the fly. For example, the annotations created on PDF files via DS Cloud during offline will be synced to other devices once it is reconnected to the Internet. With cloud station suite, every change made to your files will be automatically synced to other devices such as PCs, mobile devices, or another Synology NAS, while multiple data versions are retained so that you can recover files from a previous point-in-time when needed. Synology Drive provides not only the synchronization features Cloud Station offers, but also comes with a unified web portal and a mobile app, allowing you to manage files and collaborate with others more effectively than ever. Cloud Station Suite features Selective Sync and offline editing, enabling files to seamlessly sync to different devices once the devices are connected to the Internet. Users can choose one-way or two-way synchronization according to their needs.
Selective sync: feature allows you to sync files to certain devices according to file format or size. For example, you can sync only the critical files in small sizes to mobile devices and sync large files to your DiskStation, thereby flexibly deploying the storage space. Offline editing: All the changes made during offline editing will be synced to Cloud Station once your device is reconnected to the Internet.
Cost-effective: SHR maximizes the data capacity of your RAID when different sizes of HDDs are used.
Easy Management: For novice users who have no technical background and still want to protect their data using RAID technology, a convenient installation wizard will guide you through all the steps during your first installation.
Scalability: You can add new disks on the fly in Storage Manager with a simple click.
Flexibility: While creating a volume, you can plan ahead and leave empty and unallocated space for future usage.
Storage management is easy with Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR) technology. SHR is an automated RAID management system allowing you to easily create and expand storage volumes and migrate RAID types without requiring details on RAID. SHR provides 1 to 2-disk redundancy to safeguard your data during drive failures.
DS1817+: Synology DiskStation DS1817+ is a 8-bay NAS powered by a quad-core CPU with AES-NI hardware encryption engine. Coming with quad 1GbE LAN ports, it can be installed with a 10GbE network interface card (NIC) or a dual M.2 SSD adapter card, thereby enhancing network speeds or boosting performance with SSD cache.
Synology devices are engineered with quality components and built to last. This service add-on extends the original limited hardware warranty on your Synology NAS to provide extended coverage.
Flexible Shared Folder/User Quota System provides comprehensive quota control on all user accounts and shared folders. Snapshot Replication provides schedulable and storage capacity-saving data protection with 1,024 shared folder backups and 65,000 system-wide snapshots. File or folder level data restoration makes data recovery fast and flexible. Automatic file self-healing detects and recovers corrupted files without user intervention.
File Station is a web-based, fast and secure management tool built to allow easy, drag-and-drop operations without requiring any complex setup on Mac or PC. Advanced search and filtering tools allow for easy organization and file sharing. For complete compatibility, DS1817+ supports the following protocols: AFP, FTP, iSCSI, NFS, SMB, and WebDAV.
So far so good.
